Modding basics: capacity, polarity and weapon damage

A mediocre weapon with suitable Mods can feel much better than a rare weapon without them. Building starts with slot compatibility, capacity and understanding the weapon's strengths. This page explains the decision process rather than prescribing a single permanent build for every weapon.

Capacity, drain and polarity

Every equipped Mod consumes capacity. Ranking up a Mod improves its effect but usually increases the drain. Matching a Mod's polarity with its slot reduces the cost, while a mismatch can make a build harder to fit. Catalysts and Reactors increase capacity on eligible equipment; Forma changes a slot polarity and requires re-leveling.

  1. Check capacity and polarity before fusing a Mod.
  2. Do not apply Forma until you have a specific planned build.
  3. Save alternate configurations for different mission demands.

Select Mods around the weapon

Start with appropriate damage, then examine the weapon's critical and status characteristics. Crit-focused builds and status-focused builds do not prioritize identical upgrades. Multishot, elemental damage and handling improvements may all matter, but test your actual time to defeat a relevant enemy instead of judging one Arsenal number in isolation.

  1. Choose one weapon you actually enjoy.
  2. Upgrade widely useful damage Mods first.
  3. Compare results against similar enemies after changing the build.

Use Endo strategically

The last rank of an expensive Mod can consume substantial Endo and Credits. For a new player, upgrading several common-use Mods often produces more improvement than maximizing one rare card. If installing a new Mod forces a more useful card off the build due to capacity, reconsider the whole configuration.

  1. Prioritize usable Mods on your main Warframe and weapons.
  2. Upgrade in small steps and keep costs visible.
  3. Return to high-cost final ranks when materials are plentiful.

Frequently asked questions

Why did equipping a Mod make my build worse or leave another Mod unequipped?

Every Mod draws from a limited capacity budget. Raising a Mod's rank increases its drain, and a polarity mismatch can increase the cost further. If the loadout no longer fits, the solution may be to reduce a less important Mod's rank, match a polarity or reconsider your upgrade plan. Do not install Forma before you know what slot arrangement you want; doing so resets the item's ordinary rank.

What should I upgrade first with limited Endo?

Choose Mods that address your most common failure. If a weapon cannot defeat normal enemies quickly, prioritize broadly useful damage and suitable elemental or critical/status improvements. If you die early, improve relevant survival tools. Many costly Mods have sharply increasing upgrade costs at their final ranks; spreading the early investment across several useful Mods can outperform maxing one card.
